This fall I moved from Mammoth down to Bishop, a small town just 45 minutes away. I’ve wanted to move for a while now, but it took me a long time to make the leap — I wanted to rent a house that felt just right.
I wanted to feel good about spending more money on housing. I wanted a yard for my aging dog and an office that wasn’t a corner of my living room. I wanted to feel like it was worth the stress and the spend to make it happen.
We’re at the end of another year now. When I started freelancing 5+ years ago I felt so lucky that people took a chance hiring me when I was new to contract work. I’ve always felt grateful that people hire me to help them out, to crack open a door into their business and poke around and make something great out of what we find.
But this year I feel especially grateful to get to work with people who have made that leap to invest in their business… people who have waited until just the right time, until they found someone who felt like the right fit, until they felt like the investment would be worth it. Finding that mutual just-the-right-fit feeling, like with my new home, has always been my goal.
Outsourcing your website management or getting website design or SEO help is often a wise decision, but this year has been a cost-cutting, economy-stressing one for many of us. So it feels even more meaningful that I’ve gotten to work with so many just-the-right-fit clients.
Monthly Tip: We should all be repurposing our content.

It’s hard to keep up with marketing as a business owner… social media posts, email newsletters, blog posts, Instagram Reels, customers asking you the same questions, etc.
When you get a great idea for a new piece of content, it’s worth taking a few minutes (and/or using a tool like ChatGPT) to repurpose it for another platform so you can reach more people.

Website & SEO Updates from Around the Web
IG Reels outperform Tiktok clips in driving views
This surprised me! Especially since Instagram stole this format from Tiktok. If you’re considering working with a content creator (on IG or Tiktok), this is a good guide.
How to use the 20% rule in design
My colleague Adam Wright sends a great newsletter, and a recent issue was about his 20% rule in design. A helpful and quick read!
Google reveals next step toward removal of tracking cookies
“The deprecation of cookies is another step towards revising web data practices, and changing how websites function in this respect, which will eventually change the landscape for digital marketing and how user behaviors are measured.”
7 winning SEO tests from SearchPilot
It’s always nice to see data on what works and what doesn’t when it comes to search. I wouldn’t go out and implement these right away, but they could be good things to consider on a case by case basis.
Links are no longer a top 3 Google Search ranking factor
Backlinks used to be a huge SEO strategy (and sometimes scam). There’s less importance on links back to your site now. This is why I believe in a human-focused approach to SEO rather than just following new SEO/algorithm trends… it tends to be more sustainable long term.
The generational marketing playbook from Sprout Social
I’m not a huge fan of generational marketing guides, but this one seems like a helpful starting point of things to consider.
Santa Tracker 2023: Google vs. Microsoft, Bing, AWS, and NORAD
If you want to nerd out on the Santa Tracker options, how ads play into them, and what goes into putting them together, this one’s for you.
From My Portfolio: Highland Property Management

I got to work with a Mammoth Lakes property management company on a new Squarespace website this fall. I love website redesigns too, but it’s always fun to create a business’s very first website.
